AIM (the Association for Independent Museums) has advice on keeping heritage volunteers up to date with the latest changes to legislation that will impact the (industrial) heritage sector in 2026. Volunteers are key to running most industrial heritage sites, so its important that they are properly briefed.
Catherine Gage, from new AIM Associate Supplier Hunters Law LLP, writes that stewardship of a museum or heritage site extends beyond the bricks and mortar, object collections, risk assessments, fire exits, and traditional safety measures. New developments are redefining good governance in volunteer-led cultural spaces. She highlights these six areas for trustees and staff to brief their volunteers on:
- Equality and inclusion
- Governance and serious incident planning
- Data protecttion responsibilities
- Safeguarding and security
- Employment status risk
- Insurance and demographic reality
