Tonedale Mill & Tone Works to Benefit From £20million Through the Levelling-Up Fund

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) announced on November 20 the results of the third round of the Levelling Up Fund. Amongst the projects included is the ‘Vision for Tonedale’. A £19,987,663 grant will see the redevelopment and restoration of the Tondedale Mill and Tone Works textile sites in Somerset. Somerset Council will oversee the work, which is due to take two-and-a-half years, involving a mixture of residential, commercial, and leisure uses on the two sites.

Tonedale Mill was probably the largest integrated woollen mill complex in the southwest region. It was established in 1790 and operated until the 1980s and was run by the Fox Brothers & Co. Ltd. Tonedale Mill, a Grade II* listed building which spun and wove woollen cloth, mostly closed during the 1980s, though a small amount of production continued on part of the site. The Tone Works (also a Grade II* listed building) dealt with the washing, drying, and finishing of cloth produced at the nearby Tonedale Mill, closing in 2000. It is a near complete example of a C19 cloth dyeing and finishing works which developed between c. 1830 and c. 1920. Both complexes are on Historic England’s Heritage At Risk register.
